All About The CUB
FAQs

What is the CUB?
The CUB is a patented, multi-award-winning inflatable support and a class 1 medical device, specially designed for use during late pregnancy, labour, and birth. It provides comfort and helps you find the best positions—much like birth balls, bean bags, stools, beds, pools, or cushions, but with unique advantages. Backed by extensive research, the CUB encourages natural, upright positions such as kneeling, all fours, squatting, and upright sitting—helping mothers move instinctively for a safer, more comfortable birth experience for both mum and baby.
Where can the CUB be used?
The CUB is wonderfully versatile—perfect for use in pre-natal classes, physiotherapy clinics, at home during pregnancy, and throughout birth, whether that’s in a hospital, birth center, or at home. We’re proud that the CUB is already trusted by many maternity facilities across the UK’s NHS, in hospitals throughout the USA, and by families and professionals around the world.
When can the CUB be used?
The CUB is a wonderful companion for mums at home in late pregnancy, helping to encourage optimal fetal positioning and offering relief from back or pelvic discomfort. (For extra tips, don’t forget to check out our Physiotherapy Guide on using the CUB!) The CUB can support you through every stage of labour, too. It’s designed to be there for you during continuous monitoring, epidural or IV infusions, internal monitoring, and even induction—whether you’re on a hospital bed (using the CUB in single inflation) or on the floor (with double inflation). During birth, the CUB provides continuous support in a variety of positions, and it can be used during a physiological third stage or with delayed cord clamping (DCC). No matter your journey, the CUB is here to help you feel comfortable, supported, and empowered.
What is the CUB made of?
The CUB is manufactured from 0.500mm medical grade PVC which is the same material as many hospital chair seats and hospital bed mattresses. PVC is commonly used in healthcare for screening, diagnosis, treatment and care, as well as in building safe healthcare environments. In fact, nearly 30% of all plastic-based medical devices are made of PVC.
PVC is characterized by high biocompatibility. PVC is compatible with virtually all pharmaceutical products in healthcare facilities today. It also has excellent water and chemical resistance. Not only does PVC offer the flexibility necessary for applications such as blood bags, mattresses or intravenous (IV) tubing, but it can also be relied upon for its strength and durability, even under changing temperatures and conditions. These properties are essential to provide convenience in use by healthcare professionals and performance thereby benefiting patient comfort and quality hospital care.
Cleaning and caring for your CUB
Cleaning the CUB Between Users
Depending on how and when it's used, the CUB might be used during birth and could come into contact with body fluids. That’s why it’s important to clean it well between each user.
How to Clean the CUB:
- If the mother is sitting on the CUB and there’s any chance of fluid getting on it, place a clean, disposable or washable sheet on top first.
- Always wear gloves and an apron when cleaning the CUB.
Step-by-step cleaning:
- While the CUB is still inflated, wipe away any visible dirt or fluids with a clean, disposable cloth and water. Pay special attention to the seams, valves, and base.
- Make sure there’s no dirt left.
- Dry the CUB with a clean paper towel or disposable cloth.
- Spray or wipe the CUB with an antibacterial cleaner, a diluted bleach solution, or antibacterial wipes.
- Let the CUB air dry fully before you deflate and store it.
The CUB is made from the same safe, hospital-grade material as many hospital chairs and mattresses. You can use any standard hospital cleaning spray or wipes, including antibacterial or sporicidal sprays, wipes, or a 10,000ppm hypochlorite (bleach) solution.
If you have any questions about cleaning, please get in touch—we’re always happy to help!
Design features of the CUB
The CUB is thoughtfully designed with your safety and comfort in mind. It has a double layer on both the top and bottom, which helps protect against punctures—especially in the areas that get the most use.
There are two separate air chambers, each with its own valve. This means if one part ever gets a puncture, the whole CUB won’t suddenly deflate. It also gives you the flexibility to use the CUB fully inflated or just with one layer, depending on your needs.
The base is wide and stable, carefully shaped to keep you comfortable and steady while you use it.
The CUB is made in a factory with strict quality controls (ISO 9001:2008 certified), meets high safety standards for materials, and includes special internal supports to make it strong and long-lasting.
Plus, it’s lightweight and easy to carry, so you can take it wherever you need it!
Benefits of the CUB
The CUB is designed to help you move naturally and find the most comfortable, healthy positions during late pregnancy, labour, and birth. It’s simple to use and works in any birth setting—whether you’re at home, in a hospital, or at a birth centre. By supporting upright positions, the CUB can help lower the chances of complications and reduce the need for medical interventions during childbirth. Even if your movement is limited or your birth is more complex, the CUB offers continuous, comfortable and reliable support—much more than a ball or stool can provide. With the CUB, you have the freedom to choose how you move and change positions, all while feeling supported and with maximum comfort. There’s truly no other product as versatile and supportive as the CUB for every stage of labour and birth.
Safe use of the CUB
The CUB® Support is designed to be semi-disposable, but with a little care, it can be used multiple times. Just remember, as with any inflatable product, it won’t last forever.
To keep your CUB in great shape:
- Please don’t let anyone play with the CUB—it’s not a toy.
- Only one person should sit or use the CUB at a time (this includes partners, staff, or visitors).
- Regular cleaning and inspection will help your CUB stay in good condition.
- When you’re not using the CUB, simply deflate it and store it safely.
- Keep the CUB away from open heat sources, as the PVC can melt or become misshapen if it gets too hot.
- Watch out for sharp objects or rough surfaces that could cause a puncture.
- Let the CUB adjust to room temperature for at least 4 hours before inflating if it’s been stored somewhere cold.
- The CUB isn’t suitable as a child’s toy, seat, or for use in a swimming pool.
- It’s normal for the CUB to need an occasional air ‘top up,’ especially in warmer environments as the material naturally stretches.
With a little love and care, your CUB will continue to offer reliable support whenever you need it!
